The warrior with the shield in the third and fourth pics may have dropped his weapon, which is bad enough. But he has also left himself wide open for a spear through the gut. His inexperience has cost him his life. It's appropriate that the less competent warriors are weeded out by the enemy, leaving the best men to survive and fight another day.

The pierced body of the captive executed in the mountains will probably be left tied to the death post as a warning to the comrades who find him, or perhaps as a means of taunting them.
