Youths who reached their eighteenth summer were required to swim to the monument of Priapus, the god of fertility. They had to scale the wet slippery monument and offer the sacrifice of their sperm at its peak. The entire town turned out to watch the naked young men as they struggled to fulfill their duty. An abundance of sperm would mean a bountiful harvest.
Those youths who did not make it to the top were escorted to the altar of Priapus where the priest extracted their sperm for them. Unfortunately for those men, they were considered to be of no value to the village. Their blood along with their sperm completed their sacrifice.
A shame that such masculine men have to die, but the ritual must be fulfilled.
