The Great Pat Hidy - themightyfoo - 08-18-2019 Pat Hidy is a name unfamiliar to many of you, but to those of us of a certain age who were playing D&D (and its offshoots) during the 1970s, he will be familiar as the artist who did the illustrations for Steve Jackson Games: Melee, Wizard, Death Test and so forth. The first edition of Melee featured an anatomically correct male gargoyle. On the cover. In full color. On a product whose main market was teenaged boys like myself. Pretty bold stuff for the 1970s, which is why most of it was toned down for the 2nd Edition. Too much teenaged boyjuice letting loose. Those of you familiar with my fantasy renders will have noticed my favorite motif is the disarmed warrior, on his knees, run through with a blade through the chest or belly. This image from Page 12 of the 1st Edition Melee rules is the reason why. I couldn't begin to count how many times I've jacked off to this image, either in physical form or in my mind's eye. I first saw it when I was 16, and it gave me an aching boner for a good six weeks which I had to relieve every hour or two. There is so much I love about this image - defeat, sex, triumph all intermingle seamlessly. The hand raised in a futile gesture of surrender, his groin and belly thrust forward and vulnerable. More than anything else I love the instant of death Pat captured reflected in the dying warrior's eyes. RE: The Great Pat Hidy - themightyfoo - 08-20-2019 Testing the new larger file limit for a Pat Hidy tribute! [attachment=695] [attachment=696] [attachment=697] [attachment=698] [attachment=699] RE: The Great Pat Hidy - TakeNoPrizners - 08-20-2019 I didn't know about Pat Hidy and am really glad you shared that hot gargoyle illustration and its meaning for you. The tribute images are great. One difference from the original that I like is that the killer is not pushing the victim's head back. The defeated man can look down and see the insertion of the sword into his body, rather than just feel it. I think you got the blood down really well, and the location of the insertion is great too. For me that area just below the sternum is a "sweet spot," because a sword shoved in at that point not only enters the chest cavity, it destroys the man's diaphragm and prevents him from breathing when he can no longer work his lungs. Judging from the amount of deathcum, it looks as if the doomed warrior likewise thinks it's a sweet spot. Here are a few of his illustrations including the gargoyle cover; it is unfortunately low-res but in the original there is no mistaking or hinting at what you are seeing. [attachment=704] Here's a troll who's apparently happy to see us. [attachment=705] And some fantasy eye candy... RE: The Great Pat Hidy - ukonz99 - 10-19-2019 I did not know about Pat Hidy either so thanks for sharing the info aqnd how it influenced you. The defeated being terminated is one of the hottest images for me and with a sword as in your images is spot on. Thanks. RE: The Great Pat Hidy - traxxgalaxy - 10-20-2019 Thanks for this image too. I saw this when I was a teenage boy and it had the same effect on me - constant jacking off. So glad to have it again. |
