If an army wants an accurate count of how many enemy warriors it slaughtered, trophy collecting is a reliable method. Taking an ear off of a kill has been common practice in a lot of wars, but there’s always a risk of inflating the body count if an over-eager soldier cheats and cuts both ears off of a kill. A guy only has one dick and one head, though, and he’ll fight like hell to keep both. Especially in the case of mass casualties, cocks are much easier to collect and transport than heads.

I usually imagine that in the mop-up after a battle among ancient warriors, the victors use satchels or baskets to collect the severed trophies and bring them back to their camp for a celebratory count. The over-the-shoulder slings and the chains of cockmeat shown in these images are a hot idea. It may be that the victors strip the fallen studs of their leather gear and re-purpose the straps as trophy stringers
