Pat Hidy is a name unfamiliar to many of you, but to those of us of a certain age who were playing D&D (and its offshoots) during the 1970s, he will be familiar as the artist who did the illustrations for Steve Jackson Games: Melee, Wizard, Death Test and so forth.
The first edition of Melee featured an anatomically correct male gargoyle. On the cover. In full color. On a product whose main market was teenaged boys like myself. Pretty bold stuff for the 1970s, which is why most of it was toned down for the 2nd Edition. Too much teenaged boyjuice letting loose.
Those of you familiar with my fantasy renders will have noticed my favorite motif is the disarmed warrior, on his knees, run through with a blade through the chest or belly. This image from Page 12 of the 1st Edition Melee rules is the reason why. I couldn't begin to count how many times I've jacked off to this image, either in physical form or in my mind's eye. I first saw it when I was 16, and it gave me an aching boner for a good six weeks which I had to relieve every hour or two.
There is so much I love about this image - defeat, sex, triumph all intermingle seamlessly. The hand raised in a futile gesture of surrender, his groin and belly thrust forward and vulnerable. More than anything else I love the instant of death Pat captured reflected in the dying warrior's eyes.
