The Italian Last of the Mohicans?
#1
It seems only the BBC had LAST OF THE MOHICANS right with their umpteen long chapter serial in the 70s. The older serial from the 30s or 40s didn't get it right and the big budget white man is hero 1990s version didn't get it right and is quite boring (Daniel Day Lewis is a boring choice for Uncus or whoever he was supposed to be and the movie is boring). AND this one...an Italian version certainly didn't get it right.

Still, there's a youth shot in the back on the way to the fort. Uncus seemingly has Magua in his sights and lets him live due to a taunt, only later to win an arena style battle in three circles only then to have himself speared in the back when he turns his back to Magua. Almost none of this is accurate to the book, of course or the more faithful BBC mini series, which is the best of the adaptations.

There is one scene where an older US army man has a Native in front of him and has his knife poised right at the navel and they fall, the Native falling so that his stomach is stabbed in the belly under the US army man, who is on top. It's startling but fast.

The ineptitude of the movie is vast and everything from setting to character placement to how the die is so wrong. I tried to do caps but it didn't work the first time. It's all not as good as it sounds at least for our fetish.

Still, the BBC version, while faithful, has long, LONG stretches of talk talk talk to do justice to the politics of the novel and they do it right but...

for the fetish, there are better scenes than any other version. Uncus, shirtless, is attacked from behind. An enemy, shirtless, holds Uncus's knife down in Uncus's holster but Uncus flexes his stomach muscles and is stronger than the man and gets the knife up out of the holster. He then has to turn slightly so that as he brings the knife down, he uses the man's own downward motion, as the enemy was trying to hold the knife down to stab the man's bare belly, low. The man falls. Uncus tomahawks him and another man. Later, Uncus does the same to many warriors.

Earlier or later, Uncus, shirtless is tied to a pole. An enemy, shirtless and young (I think) comes in to taunt Uncus who calls him a coward to do so this way. Uncus has already been untied by his father and as the enemy moves to stab Uncus in the bare belly, Uncus jabs his knife in the man's belly instead. The man falls and gasps as Uncus breathes out a victory. Uncus's father sees the man groan, "That was badly done." Uncus agrees as the man should not have called out to give warning. ANd then there's Uncus's death later on.

it worked?
