He probably left himself open on purpose. I imagine that moment when he decided to take the blade was thrilling and made his heart race even more. When the pain started he greeted it grimly; he knew it would hurt. When it pushed out his back, he savored the feeling. Death would be the prize and that's more than okay, he thought more giddy from the pain than fearful.
