The spearmen were obviously well-trained. They got many of the gladiators just below the lowest rib, so their weapons would pass through the torso, unobstructed by ribs. Spear chuckers with a single shaft to hurl have to make every throw count. After the relinquished swords have been collected from the dead invaders, the defenders will merely allow the tide to carry the naked bodies out to the sharks. Only a few gladiators got close enough to the town to bloody their blades.

Great images and description. The spear throwers took the day nicely their aim true and the gladiators received glorious deaths and suitable orgasms.
